About Us
C. W. Haman School is a TK - 5 grade school located at the corner of Los Padres Boulevard and Homestead Road in Santa Clara. Besides serving the residents surrounding the school, the school also serves the residential section of Santa Clara bordering Santa Clara University.
C. W. Haman School is a place where there are high expectations for reaching academic standards and a challenging curriculum is the foundation to student success. We work to develop a strong sense of community where students feel safe and are appreciated for individual differences. We value parents and the community as significant contributors to student learning. We continually strive to enhance the self-esteem of each child as we work to ensure their continued success.
Our school is located in the beautiful, older section of the City of Santa Clara, where quaint homes are nestled among mature, tree-lined streets. Our well-maintained grounds join with the city's local park to provide students and families with a spacious area for sports and play. In addition to structural modernization from 2001-2005, Haman School has undergone major school reform focused on student improvement. As a member of the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative (BASRC), we have utilized the Cycle of Inquiry method to analyze student success and our instructional programs. We are also members of the Noyce Literacy Initiative, "Every Child a Reader and Writer". Through this program, our teachers have received in-depth training in writing instruction. The efforts we have put toward these initiatives have had a profound effect upon our student success and school-wide reform toward achieving high standards for all students.
Parent and community involvement in the school and its instructional program play a major role in our effectiveness. This involvement is reflected in over 2000 volunteer hours recorded in 2005. Parents volunteer in classrooms to assist with hands-on learning. They help run our Family Literacy and Math/Science Nights. They work to orient new families to our school and raise funds to support the purchase of books, computers, maps and to fund assemblies. Our PTA and School Site Council help to shape the focus of the school both academically and socially. The success of the partnership between our staff and parents to support students' learning is represented by our continual rise in students' test scores and the Academic Performance Index.
