Program Overview

Haman Elementary School is the home of Santa Clara Unified School District's regional program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.  Credentialed teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing use auditory-oral methods to teach students the language and auditory skills needed to access the general education curriculum.  Students have a home base in their grade level classroom and curriculum is delivered in collaboration with the general education teachers.  Adaptations are provided to improve classroom listening environment.  Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff provide daily support for learning in the mainstream environment through a combination of push in and pull out instruction tailored to each student's individual needs.

  • Expressive language development
  • Reading: decoding and comprehension
  • Writing: spelling and sentence structure
  • Functional/academic vocabulary building
  • Building background knowledge and bridging connections to curriculum
  • Higher level language needed for abstract thinking and making inferences
  • Social language
  • Advocacy skills needed to cope with hearing loss
